Howells-Dodge Students Explore Manufacturing Career Opportunities
Nineteen Howells-Dodge students recently had the opportunity to step outside the classroom and explore career opportunities through visits to three Columbus-area businesses. The manufacturing career exploration day gave students a firsthand look at local industries, the types of careers available in the area, and the skills needed to be successful in the workplace.
The students began their day at Columbus Hydraulics, where they toured the facility and learned more about the company’s operations and career opportunities. The visit provided students with an opportunity to see how hydraulics and manufacturing are used in the workplace while learning about the variety of jobs needed to keep a business running.
The group then traveled to Central Confinement/Mid-Plains Industries. Students learned about the company and its manufacturing processes while getting an inside look at another local career pathway. The visit allowed students to see how classroom skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, attention to detail, and responsibility are applied in an actual work environment.
After lunch, the students visited Behlen Mfg. Co., where they continued their exploration of manufacturing careers. Behlen has long been a part of the Columbus community, and students were able to see the scale and variety of work involved in manufacturing products for customers.
Career experiences such as these are an important part of preparing students for life after high school. While students may have an idea of what career they would like to pursue, visiting businesses gives them the opportunity to experience different work environments and learn about careers they may not have previously considered.
The visits also emphasized that there are many different career opportunities available close to home. Manufacturing and industrial businesses need employees with a wide range of skills, including skilled trades, engineering, technology, business, management, maintenance, welding, production, and many others.
Howells-Dodge appreciates the Columbus businesses that welcomed its students and took the time to share their knowledge, facilities, and career opportunities.
