Boys' basketball takes the lead over Axtell

HDC: 15/19/23/13 FINAL: 70

Axtell: 11/13/6/7 FINAL: 37

The Jags played the Axtell Wildcats in Howells on Monday, March 3, to punch their ticket to state.

Leading scorers for the Jaguars were Nathan Tomcak- 17, Andre Martin and Dane Meyer- 13, Chase Luther- 11, Carson Heard and Hunter Luther- 6, and Ethan Prusa and Cole Bayer- 2. Leading the Jaguars in rebounds were Andre Martin- 10, Dane Meyer- 6, Nathan Tomcak and Ethan Prusa- 3, Chase Luther, Isaac Meyer, and Carson Heard- 2.

“It was a high-tempo game with a ton of scoring in the first half. We went on an 8-0 run to start the game, but they responded with their own 7-0 run in the first quarter. Axtell played with a lot of intensity, especially on the offensive boards, but the boys did a nice job matching their intensity,” said head coach Kevin Janata. “With a 10-point lead at halftime, we really settled in on defense, only giving up 13 points in the second half. We were able to match their tempo and overall had a good night on the offensive and defensive ends.”

With the victory, the boys qualify for the Class D1 State Championship next week. They will take their 22-5 record into the tournament as the 2nd seed, playing Dundy County-Straton on Wednesday, March 12, at 6 p.m. at Devaney.
